The Cosmopolitan – a hot pink, pleasantly sharp cocktail served in the iconic martini glass, was the essence of the 1990s. It’s one of my top 3 favourite cocktails and it is one of the most popular drinks in the world along with the classic martini.

The History of Cosmopolitan cocktail
Before the Cosmopolitan or “Cosmo” (as we know it) became the must-have liquid accessory of Sarah Jessica Parker acolytes, there was the Cosmopolitan, created by bartender Toby Cecchini at the Odeon in New York City, in 1988. Adapted from a pink-hued mock-Martini recipe. It had been floating around Florida and San Francisco, Cecchini retooled the ingredient list with higher-quality mixers, choosing Absolut Citron vodka, lime juice, Cointreau and cranberry juice.
Most bartenders know how to make this light, fruity martini and it is a great choice for a casual night out. There are hundreds of variations on the Cosmo. Some use more or less cranberry juice, some triple sec instead of Cointreau, and some include citrus vodka (like my recipe).
Citron vodka is the base ingredient of this drink. Although a lot of mixologists use regular vodka, which is more in line with older Cosmopolitan recipes. Accordingly, Rose’s lime juice is often used instead of fresh lime juice.
The Recipe
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and toss 4-5 cubes of ice. Shake well until chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with lime peal. Enjoy!
“Vodka may not be the answer but, it’s worth a shot.”
